Today's cards are all so perfect--perfect layout, thick shiny stock, razor sharp, etc, and yet the cards are certainly not loved any more than older cards, even with all the flaws that older cards have. This 1978 set is 30 years old and still gets tons of love.Andyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05644396308532248413noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-968890904774098130.post-48947674239468130492008-11-11T11:54:00.000-05:002008-11-11T11:54:00.000-05:00I don't think there's any way in the era of Mike C...I don't think there's any way in the era of Mike Coolbaugh that Topps would take all their photos in foul territory facing away from the plate during spring training. But it apparently seems to be one of their favorite things to do in 1978 -- note the surreal Rick Manning card.

This was a good block of long-term players -- only Sadek didn't appear in 1988's Topps set -- although 1987 was the last season for Phil Niekro, Reggie Jackson, Rick Manning, and Doug DeCinces.Fool'sErrandBoyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05830364002404583725noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-968890904774098130.post-82770066262761613022008-11-11T11:43:00.000-05:002008-11-11T11:43:00.000-05:00Rick Manning is/was always one of my favorite play...Rick Manning is/was always one of my favorite players. I've said this on other posts regarding the '78s, but my friends and I called these "The Written Kind" because of the scripted lettering. It's funny now how centering is something we look at. back then, all that mattered was who was on the card. Okay, well, for me anyway, that's still all that matters... :-)--Davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03884046413767054746noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-968890904774098130.post-54725974657558792922008-11-11T09:02:00.000-05:002008-11-11T09:02:00.000-05:00You know what else is great about this batch of ca...You know what else is great about this batch of cards? All of the stirrups...even if Aase has to label his in order to keep track of them, he sure knows how to wear them. Doug's orange stirrups are a thing of beauty, and we only get to see them nowadays when the O's Turn Back the Clock.

Speaking of Doug, I have no idea what is up with his 'stache. It looks like he saved some of his hair clippings and pasted them on his face.Kevinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01334533396646438555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-968890904774098130.post-82385284742215647362008-11-10T18:31:00.000-05:002008-11-10T18:31:00.000-05:00Mike Sadek -- there just wasn't much else that cou...Mike Sadek -- there just wasn't much else that could be said about him other than his sacrifice bunts. How about "Mike has had fewer days on the disabled list for psychological issues that his namesake, Mike Ivie."

Doug DeCinces -- I remember this card finally allowed him to have one where his stats showed he'd taken the job from Brooks Robinson. Maybe that shadow is really Brooks' shadow....

Rick Manning -- showing the pose that made him one of the outstanding fielding center fielders in the AL in those days. I don't think he matched up all around with guys like Amos Otis or Fred Lynn.MMayeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09893007769493689849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-968890904774098130.post-46104194816898463742008-11-09T20:44:00.000-05:002008-11-09T20:44:00.000-05:00From this photo it's apparent that fleerfan is rig...From this photo it's apparent that fleerfan is right about it being Candlestick Park.Andyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05644396308532248413noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-968890904774098130.post-26358479587997812742008-11-09T02:27:00.000-05:002008-11-09T02:27:00.000-05:00I like the new layout of your blog, especially the...I like the new layout of your blog, especially the counters. i wonder how high that All-Star counter will reach.zman40https://www.blogger.com/profile/07221290018484413350noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-968890904774098130.post-88133474403659872522008-11-07T22:40:00.000-05:002008-11-07T22:40:00.000-05:00When you are finished posting this set, I'm going ...When you are finished posting this set, I'm going to print them all out so I can have my very own "Play Ball" Played by two game.dayfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09343838411856677615noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-968890904774098130.post-45761115476233316752008-11-07T21:00:00.000-05:002008-11-07T21:00:00.000-05:00The Phil Niekro picture was taken at Candlestick, ...The Phil Niekro picture was taken at Candlestick, not Atlanta.
